Mouth ulcers are common, but they can still be worrying
Most of us have had a mouth ulcer at some stage: a small, sore spot inside the cheek, on the tongue or along the gum that seems to appear out of nowhere. They can sting when you eat, talk, or brush – and when you’re already busy with work, kids and life, they’re just another annoyance.
That said, it’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious if an ulcer is lingering, unusually painful, or keeps returning. At Guiney Dental, we regularly reassure patients that most mouth ulcers are harmless but we also take concerns seriously and are happy to check anything that doesn’t look or feel right.
As Freda Guiney often reminds patients, it’s always better to get peace of mind early than to sit at home worrying (or Googling symptoms at night!).
What is a mouth ulcer?
A mouth ulcer is usually a shallow sore in the lining of the mouth. They’re different from cold sores (which tend to occur on the lips and are viral). Mouth ulcers are very common, and they often heal by themselves within 7–14 days.
Common causes of mouth ulcers
A lot of ulcers can be traced back to everyday triggers, such as:
- Accidental trauma (biting your cheek, a sharp crisp edge, brushing too hard)
- A sharp tooth edge or rough filling rubbing the area
- Braces/dentures or a mouthguard causing friction
- Stress and tiredness (yes, it really can show up in the mouth)
- Minor viral illnesses
- Vitamin deficiencies (especially if ulcers are frequent)
- Spicy/acidic foods irritating an already-sensitive spot
If an ulcer appears after you’ve grazed your cheek or you’ve been under pressure, it’s often nothing sinister, but it still deserves proper care so it heals quickly.
When an ulcer is likely “just an ulcer”
In many cases, a mouth ulcer is straightforward. It’s more likely to be minor if it:
- is small and round/oval
- feels sore but manageable
- improves within a few days
- clears up within 1–2 weeks
- isn’t accompanied by a lump, persistent swelling, or unexplained bleeding
When to get it checked (this is the key part)
If you’re unsure, trust your instinct. We’d much rather you call in and have us take a look than spend weeks worried.
Book a checkup with your Ballincollig Dentist if:
- It hasn’t healed after 2 weeks
A sore that lingers beyond two weeks should be assessed, even if it’s not very painful. - It keeps coming back
Recurring ulcers can sometimes be linked to friction (a tooth edge, a filling), or other underlying factors and it’s worth finding the cause. - It’s unusually large, painful or spreading
Some ulcers are more aggressive and need relief and monitoring. - There’s a lump, persistent swelling or a red/white patch nearby
Most of the time this is still something benign, but this is exactly where a professional check matters. - It’s interfering with eating, sleeping or speaking
Pain and irritation can spiral, especially if you’re not able to clean the area properly.
What you can do at home to help an ulcer heal
If you’re managing a typical ulcer, these steps can help:
- Warm salt-water rinses (especially after meals)
- Avoid spicy, acidic or very hot foods for a few days
- Use a soft toothbrush and brush gently around the area
- Try an ulcer gel or protective paste from the pharmacy to reduce irritation
- Stay hydrated (dry mouth can worsen soreness)
If you suspect the ulcer is being caused by rubbing from a tooth edge or dental work, that’s a good reason to get in touch – it may be a quick, simple fix.
Why families in Ballincollig choose a check instead of guessing
A big part of dentistry is reassurance and clarity. Many patients come to us feeling nervous about “what if it’s something serious” and a calm professional assessment makes a huge difference.
As one patient put it (and this is exactly what we aim for):
“Freda Guiney is a wonderful and compassionate dentist who puts you at ease immediately. I used to be somebody who panicked in the waiting room for other dentists, however this lady has renewed my faith and I have confidence now to go for regular check ups. I highly recommend to any nervous patients.” – Danielle Polley Review
That sense of being listened to matters, especially when something is worrying you.
