‘Healthy Snacks’ That May Be Bad For Your Teeth

We all know that there’s a link between certain foods and tooth decay. However, it can be tricky to spot all of the potential problems that some foods pose for our dental health, so some of us may be eating damaging foods on a regular basis without realizing it.

Sweets are a common culprit in damaging the enamel that protects our teeth, and if we are not brushing and flossing correctly, sugars may
sit on the teeth for many hours. However, there are many other foods that can cause damage to our teeth and gums, and some of these are far
less obvious. Talk to us at Guiney Dental Clinic for more information.

Surprising Foods That Can Damage Teeth

  1. Ice. Many people believe that ice must be good for their teeth since it is just frozen water. However, chewing
on ice can cause damage to enamel and compromise the health of your teeth, so this is a habit to avoid!
  2. Dried fruit. Dried fruit is often thought of as a healthy snack, but many dried fruits are very sticky, which
can cause damage to the teeth as it means that they are not as easily washed away as other types of food. Dried fruit is best enjoyed as an
occasional treat when you can brush teeth soon afterwards, and ensure that you floss regularly, too.
  3. Citrus fruits. If you thought all fruit was good for your teeth, think again. Citrus fruits, while excellent
for your general health, can erode enamel and irritate mouth sores. Be sure to brush your teeth around thirty minutes after enjoying citrus
fruits to avoid damage, and drink plenty of water to help cleanse the teeth, too.
  4. Potato crisps. While you may think that crisps are a better snack for your teeth than sugary alternatives, you
should be aware that potato chips are very starchy. Starchy, crunchy foods can easily become stuck in the teeth, so be sure to floss extra
carefully if you have eaten snacks such as crisps during the day, to avoid plaque building up on your teeth.
  5. Danger drinks. You probably already knew that sugary soda and sports drinks could cause problems for the teeth
and gums, but did you know that coffee and alcohol can also do a great deal of damage to your oral health? Alcohol can cause dehydration,
reducing saliva flow and increasing the risk of oral infections such as gum disease, as well as increasing your risk of mouth cancer. Coffee
has the same drying effect in the mouth, but also increases the likelihood of staining on the teeth.
