The way our teeth look makes a big difference to how we feel, and taking care of our dental health can ensure we keep smiling all summer long. Summer is a great time to relax and take a break, but maintaining your usual dental routine will help to ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy and strong all year round.

Here at the Guiney Dental Clinic, we’re always on hand to give advice and information about how to keep your teeth pearly white. Here are our tops tips on caring for your teeth in the summer months, and how to prevent problems that could turn your summer into a washout.

Top Tips For Summertime Dental Care

  1. Don’t crunch ice!. Ice is only frozen water, right? So it can’t cause any problems? Wrong! Chewing or crunching ice in
your teeth can crack or chip them, as well as causing damage to tooth enamel. It can also cause sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks, increase
the likelihood of cavities and damage existing fillings and crowns. In short, it’s a very bad idea!
  2. Avoid sugary snacks. It’s nice to enjoy an indulgent treat in the summertime, but too many sugary snacks can end up
damaging your teeth and gums and increase tooth decay. Avoid sugary drinks and snacks, and try to limit sweets to immediately after mealtimes, and then
    brush teeth.
  3. Don’t ignore sensitive teeth. If your teeth are sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks, this can be very uncomfortable.
It can be a sign that dental enamel is damaged, or that you have a buildup of plaque or tooth decay. You should speak to your dentist about your options,
which may include professional cleaning or the application of sealants.
  4. Get a check up. Ideally, you should visit your dentist every 6-12 months, depending on your dental health. Booking a check
up will enable your dentist to take care of your teeth and gums, advise you on any developing dental problems, and alert you to any potential health
    concerns.
